last day of summer

August 23rd, 2010 by Cindy

The day before I had to report back to school, we went on a family adventure to Columbia, SC. Our playgroup had planned a trip to the children’s museum (it’s called EdVenture – lame, huh?) and I thought it would be the perfect end for our fabulous summer. Hubster had the day off from work, so all three of us were able to go. Bri loved playing on the giant that greeted us in the main entrance.

{See the kid peeking out of the giant’s eye? You’ll see that window in a minute from the other side.}

There was a big chair on the lower level near the feet of the giant.  Bri (of course) wanted to get down immediately to play.

On the back side of the giant the systems of the body are also a playscape. It was like a three story ChickfilA playground on the back. Except there was a continuous heart beat. And all of the organs were toys.

After we played on the giant, we discovered a few foreign countries. Bri had fun experimenting with all of the hands on learning that the museum had to offer.

I loved this musical jumping game. Bri would say each letter before hopping on it. So cute!

Daddy and Bri had fun playing with the cars. Bri got to drive this little red bug, but Daddy got to drive the big fire truck!

But both of them had the most fun in the diner’s kitchen. Daddy flipped pancakes.

{Sorry for the blur. I set the focus on the pancake and it was in motion. But it was the moment that mattered.}

Bri waited tables and worked the register.

After we played at the museum, we got to catch up with Aunt Missa and Uncle Josh for lunch. We grabbed this picture of Bri, Daddy and Aunt Missa before we left!

All in all, it was a wonderful day. We had our share of meltdowns, but it was a day that I’ll cherish forever.

three year old flower girl session

August 8th, 2010 by Cindy

Bri will be turning three next month, so tonight we took some birthday girl pictures for her. Earlier this year she wore this dress for her Aunt’s wedding. My goal with this photo shoot was to capture a canvas-worthy image that can grace our walls at home and then my booth wall at the upcoming bridal expos.

Some of my favorite shots are the ones that we won’t frame. Here are a few outtakes! We practiced making silly faces …

… in order to get genuine smiles.

We also brought along some candy to motivate her to behave. In the image below she’s saying, “I want FIVE pieces of candy.” She’s learning how to negotiate!

We had so many beautiful images that I don’t know which one to use for my canvas! It will be a 16×20 and any of these would work. Which one would you pick?

Tough decision, huh? She’s just too cute! Feel free to list more than one choice. I need help narrowing them down!

trash the dress session ~ Augusta, GA photography

August 6th, 2010 by Cindy

Last year, when there was still so much for me to learn about photography, but I had bravely ventured into this uncharted territory of starting a new business, I came across this amazing couple who happily modeled for me. We worked with their adorable dog, Mojo, and captured engagement pictures.

I remember the shocked excitement that I felt when the couple asked if they could jump in that fountain for pictures. It was such a fun moment! So it came as no surprise when Celia contacted me six months after her wedding to see about trashing her dress. This girl will do anything for a good shot!

Last year when I did their engagement session, Celia asked for a ring shot. I tried in vain to capture the shot she wanted, but without a macro lens, it looked awful. Since then, I purchased the right lens for the job. So I asked her if she still wanted the shot this time around. I love that you can see the water moving around the rings! So fun!!!

Celia’s really sweet husband and two of her friends came along with us to help carry things. Daryl carefully aided her over the slippery rocks. They were so cute together. Still completely in love! It was fun to watch.

busy saturday ~ a day in my life

August 3rd, 2010 by Cindy

6:54 am ~ Woke up. Got ready for early morning hair appointment. Want to see how bad it was before?

It was bad. I had been looking forward to this appointment for weeks. My beauty operator is AWESOME. I couldn’t wait to get a new hair do. Here’s another ‘before’ from the front.

7:45 am ~ Sitting in a black leather chair with one of those huge black bibs swirling around me. I told her that I wanted to look like Carrie Underwood.

I love it! Still have to do a double take when I catch myself in the mirror.

Did I mention that she’s awesome? No one else gets to touch my hair. Except my two year old. She likes to ‘fix’ it sometimes too.

11:30 am ~ Lunch with my fam at home. Bri went down for a nap.

2:00 pm ~ Birthday party!!! We got to celebrate at a Dora themed birthday party with a bounce house. Bridoodle was in hog heaven. So much fun!

It took her a little while to get warmed up to the bounce house. She wanted me to get in with her for moral support. In a skirt. That was a challenge!

Bridoodle loved the Dora decorations. She squealed in delight over the cake and from four feet away, she graciously tried to help blow out the candles.

After the party, we headed home with a storm close on our heels. We’ve had a lot of storms this summer but I’ve never seen one as strong as the one that afternoon. Chunks of hail were falling from the sky. The trees were swirling in the sky like froth on top of coffee. It was intense.

I had a photo shoot scheduled for Saturday evening, and I was fairly certain that it would be rained out. Miraculously, though, the storm stopped and the sky cleared up for the hour and a half that I needed to get the job done. It was delightful to work with this family. They have the most amazing sense of humor. I laughed until my sides hurt. We had a really good time!

You can always tell a lot about people when you meet their parents. And this couple just made me fall in love with my friend Aleasha all over again!

We had four generations present for this photo shoot. And this mother-daughter duo knew how to work the camera! They came up with some really fun poses.

Meanwhile, the kids enjoyed square dancing. {Not really! They were just running around enjoying the grassy field.}

Each child got a turn with the white board. That was a big hit!

Did I mention that it had stormed that afternoon? Yes, so the grass was pretty wet and there were leaves and branches everywhere. Fun times.

We ended the session down by the river. And I requested this little artistic series. We had to let that fantastic hat take center stage!

As we were walking back, I grabbed a few images of this darling baby girl. I can’t believe how much she’s grown in the last few weeks!

my little helper

A few days ago, I made peach cobbler. We had spent the previous week rearranging and redecorating the house. It had been a marathon project. After we finished, we went on a spree of inviting people over to see the results. My sweet girl, offered to help me make the cobbler for this particular evening of friends and food. We made a mess! It was so much fun!

“Look at my hands Mama!” She had fun with the flour. A little bit too much fun. But she sure is cute!

Kara & Robert ~ Athens, GA engagement session

July 20th, 2010 by Cindy

Kara and I have been friends since we were in sixth grade. She and I lived in the same neighborhood. You could frequently find us playing in her back yard or swimming in my pool. Once we completely redecorated her parents basement and I believe we used three cans of air freshener in an attempt to get the musty basement smell out. There are so many memories that come flooding back at the mention of her name!

When Kara got engaged she quickly started chatting with me about all of her ideas. We got pretty excited! She asked me to help her find some Bible verses that she could use in the ceremony and started dreaming up some fabulous ideas for her portraits.

As the date for this engagement shoot drew near, I watched the weekend weather forecasts closely. Kara and Robert were driving across four states to come home and there was a 60% chance of rain. The day before our shoot the weather was (of course) absolutely perfect. So I stopped worrying about it. But the next morning, we had drizzling clouds and gray skies!

Kara and Robert were absolute champs. They toughed out the rain and even laughed about it. At one point, Kara snuggled into her fiance’s arms and said, “How often do you get to play in the rain with the one you love for the camera?” I’ve never had clients who were so devoted to getting a great shot before!

Kara and Robert have a hobby that has brought them closer while they’ve been dating. They love to go explore cemeteries. Since they’ve started dating, they’ve each had to move across the country a few times. So whenever they’re in a new city, they check out the historical graveyards. It seemed only natural to capture this element of their relationship! So we did!

When we arrived at the cemetery, and turned onto the creatively named “Cemetery Street,” I was tickled to see this sign. I climbed up to add the flowers to the sign because I had to capture this image!

Kara dreamed up this beautiful shot. She borrowed her parent’s settee and they brought it along for the session! Did I mention that this couple is awesome? Braving the rain and bringing their own furniture! I have the best clients in the world!!!

We also captured the beautiful shoes that will be making an appearance on the couple’s wedding day. They match Kara’s ring set perfectly!

Before we left, Kara chose a rather neglected looking stone to bestow her flowers upon. I don’t think any of us wanted to leave. We could have continued shooting all day. It was a fabulous morning!

This little munchkin was so much fun on her birthday! I couldn’t resist posting a few more glimpses of those beautiful blue eyes. Enjoy!

splashy birthday party ~ North Augusta, SC photography

July 14th, 2010 by Cindy

This three year old birthday girl has the sweetest disposition! You can tell she had a blast playing in the water in her backyard. Ariel graced the birthday cake and decorations to complete the theme.

Before the guests arrived, we had fun dancing to tunes from The Little Mermaid and other Disney hits. Daddy and daughter twirled around to a song from Cinderella, and I couldn’t help but think of the perfectly fitting Steven Curtis Chapman song. “So I will dance with Cinderella, while she is here in my arms. Cuz I know something the prince never knew. All too soon the clock will strike midnight and she’ll be gone.”

Notice Bridoodle’s rain boot haphazardly cast aside behind her. She insisted on wearing them to the party! Goober.

your design consult

July 13th, 2010 by Cindy

Did you know that I’ve recently added a new free bonus that comes standard with EVERY session? That’s right! All portrait sessions now include a free design consult.

What’s a design consult? Well, I’m so glad you asked! First we’ll go over the basics of what you are looking to capture with your session and where the images will go after we’re done. Then you’ll get to choose your design color scheme. I’ll review your ideas and offer my feedback with story boards to show you what I mean. For example, today I worked up these two design boards for a client who likes teal. {All images were borrowed from Old Navy.}

The first color scheme incorporates elements of black, teal, gray and purple. The teal is a little bluer than the one below. It’s important that you choose the same hue of teal for the whole ensemble or the results can look funny.

The version below works with black, teal, gray and yellow. The greener teal really compliments the sunny yellow colors!

Which color scheme do you like best? I can’t pick between the two!
