happiness captured

April 8th, 2011 by Cindy

“Consider it pure joy my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds. For you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1: 2-4

This week has been pretty difficult. I’ve only shared part of the black cloud that seems to be hanging over us. The rest just seems either too tedious or too embarrassing to talk about. However, what I really want to share with you, are the many moments of happiness that we’ve experienced this week while I was off of work for spring break. It hasn’t been all bad, despite my Eeyore attitude.

We visited Hilton Head Island for a day during the whole tree fiasco. It was a nice diversion from the stress. The princess had a blast.

The only way to tear her away from the sand and salt water was with a promise of icecream.

We have AMAZING friends who helped us out all week. On Monday a friend let me use her bathtub so that I could bathe a dirty Brimeister. (The hotel bathmat was too dirty for a bath.) Her husband helped us with the tarping of the roof that day too. And we had a blast playing in the park with their kids that morning (not pictured).

On Tuesday we met some more friends at Monkey Joes for playtime. Bri loved bouncing and sliding.

There were a few things that I learned (this being our first visit to Monkey Joes) that I wished someone had told me beforehand!

On Wednesday we went to see the movie Hop and we had a nutritious dinner of movie theater popcorn, cherry Iceee and Sour Patch watermelon slices. Mmmmm!

On Thursday I found these flowers on sale for $5 and had to buy them.

We had some fun times as a family too. Most notably – the night that everyone (including Daddy) dressed up as a princess.

We watched the movie Tangled at least a hundred times this week. And I couldn’t resist buying this play dress when we were grocery shopping. She truly believes that she’s Rapunzel when she wears it. She sings the songs and mimics her every behavior. It’s the cutest thing! Earlier today she told our dog, “Hi Lilly! It’s me Rapunzel. Do you like my dress?”

tumbling trees

April 7th, 2011 by Cindy

Bridoodle was sitting at the kitchen table nibbling on the slice of pizza that she’d asked for even though it was only an hour before dinner time. Normally, I would have told her no, because Officer Hubster was working and we always wait to have dinner with him – especially on a Saturday. For some reason though, I warmed up a slice for each of us. Looking back now, I’m so glad that I did.

Out of the clear blue sky came a rumbling like thunder. It shook the house. Bri looked up at me, pizza in hand, absolutely shocked. I glanced past her face to see branches through the window. Branches that hadn’t been there moments ago. The house stopped rumbling and the world started spinning faster again. Grabbing my keys, cell phone and daughter, I raced in the opposite direction of the tree, all the while speed dialing Officer Hubs. “We have an EMERGENCY. A tree fell on our house. We are exiting the building. I need you to come home now!”

We stood in the driveway shaking at the sight of a massive tree resting on top of our tiny house. Our neighbors rushed over to see what had happened. “It sounded like a gun shot went off.” The next seven minutes were a swirl of dogs and people and questions. Then Officer Hubs arrived to check out the damage.

In all of the excitement, I never even thought to grab my camera. Hubs snapped some quick shots for insurance purposes while I made phone calls and kept Bri calm and entertained.

Our fabulous insurance people found us a nice hotel room and took care of the bill for us. We stayed there Saturday night and Sunday night while we waited for the tree removal guys to come Monday morning. (Everyone is closed on Sunday.)

There were NINE holes in our roof from the tree.

Hubster tarped up the roof so that it wouldn’t leak because of course there was rain in the forecast for Monday night. It turned out that we actually had a tornado watch. Lots of trees went down all through the neighborhood while we slept. When we woke the next morning we saw lots of debris and limbs. Another tree in our backyard tipped over and is now leaning on the closest tree. Thankfully it didn’t fall in the direction of the house.

We are very thankful to be alive and back in our own home. As Bri said, “Mommy, don’t worry. Jesus will protect us.” And He did. We really appreciate your prayers as we navigate through the new issues of having the roof fixed and more trees removed. We have to cancel our vacation to pay the bills for this disaster. And I know that I should be thankful that we have the money to spare, but I am heartbroken about our Disney trip. Guess it’s time to start planning for next year.

7 days of spring

March 27th, 2011 by Cindy

day 1 -  Life at the Zoo

Bri and I had a marvelous time at the zoo today. If you have time, you should totally check out the rest of our day – blogged.

I can’t wait to see everyone again! Yay – for spring and 7days!!!

day 2 -Laying Low

The munchkin climbed up in my lap last night and fell asleep in my arms while I commented on 7days photos. Poor baby. She’s been sick all day – alternating between laying down on the floor and the couch – running a fever.

Last week I had my first CROCHETING lesson and I’ve been working on a baby blanket while we’ve rested today. I double stitched for half an hour while she slept on top of me at nap time before my arm died. Definitely plan to wash it in Dreft before I give it to anybody – don’t want to pass any germs along!

day 3 – lunch with Snow White

Her royal highness, the princess, is feeling much better. However, during the peak of her fever Sunday afternoon, I went ahead and called in a substitute teacher for Monday. So we spent the day together. She has been bouncing off the wall with all of her returned energy. We absolutely had to get out of the house. So we went to lunch at Chili’s. Our waiter was extremely delighted to serve lunch to Snow White.

day 4 -our 30 x 30 goal

Today, I went to work but had a fever myself [the joys of having a sick child cough in your face] so I only stayed for two hours before a substitute relieved me. Didn’t really feel like showing you my sleep-matted hair, so here’s what I looked like almost 7 years and 30 pounds ago.

Hubs and I have started a new diet/exercise regime using our smartphones. We each downloaded an app that tallies our daily calories. It usually takes me about three days to build up a -3500 which means a one pound weight loss on the scale.

Our goal is to each lose 30 pounds by Hubster’s 30th birthday in June.

{double photo credits to Dan Evans – our awesome but now retired wedding photographer}

day 5 – UP like the movie

When I saw that the theme for day 5 would be UP my immediate thought was Pixar’s movie. I love that movie! So today after school, Bridoodle and I made a special trip for balloons so that we could capture the theme.

Betcha can’t find me! :o ) I’m hidden fairly well this time.

day 6 – dancing teacher

Tomorrow is a teacher work day, so no students! Yay! And we only have one more full week before spring break – triple YAY!!! And the school year is all downhill from there. So, wow, it’s almost SUMMER in my book.

This gives a teacher plenty to dance and sing about. I spent most of my lunch working on these shots to express my happiness.

PS – Can you tell that I feel better? No more fever!

day 7 -

I burned 325 calories on my eliptical today. The chair contraption that I’m sitting on was the closest to the shiny gym wall mirror, but I have no idea what you’re supposed to do in it. The little handlebars were perfect for composing a quick shot! Maybe it’s designed for self portraits. Heeehee.

I had so much fun seeing everyone for 7days! Can’t wait to celebrate summer with you soon.

monkeying around at the zoo

March 19th, 2011 by Cindy

The morning started with typical chaos. Bridoodle found a brand new bed of ants beside our van this morning and she shrieked in fear as they climbed all over her feet and flip-flops. I’m sure our neighbors did not appreciate that kind of Saturday morning wake up call. Of course, I didn’t bother to think about them until well after I was finished ridding her little toes of the ferocious ants. We were both in panic mode. (She gets her drama from her mama.) I carried her gently back to the car and then I backed OVER the ant bed. Showed them. Ha!

We spent a few minutes in the van posing for pictures because the early morning light was so beautiful and today is the first day of our 7days Spring run. Yay!!! That means I’ll be posting a self portrait every day this week. Here’s my contribution for day 1 …

Did I mention that my Bridoodle is adorable? I can’t get enough of this face. Love it!

So we hopped, skipped and jumped over to the zoo. It was magical this morning – temperatures in the 70′s when we arrived. By the time we left it was so hot! Felt like summer.

We immediately found a restroom and I tried another attempt at a 7days self-portrait. This close-up of Bri’s hat might find its way into a future detective game. Keep your eyes peeled!

Speaking of her hat, she absolutely insisted on wearing it today. Isn’t that cute?

After awhile we got a map. Bri wanted her own, of course. She had so much fun looking at it – just like Curious George at the zoo.

We fell in love with the baby babboon. Bri said, “Mama, this monkey’s just like Curious George. Only he doesn’t have a man with a yellow hat. He just has a daddy.”

The next time we go to the zoo, I’m going to figure out a way to bring more lenses. I was dying for my zoom lens here. However, it was stashed in the trunk because I couldn’t fit it in the stroller. Next time, I will find a way!

I was really glad that I brought the stroller. We only used it twice but both times I was so glad that she could sit down. I would have been dealing with MELTDOWNS both times. Plus it was really nice to be able to give her a snack while we kept moving. And it was really nice to have my shoulders free of all the heavy stuff stashed inside the stroller.

Bri was delighted to learn that chimpanzees eat ChickfilA for breakfast.

We met some friends at the zoo and we all headed straight for the train when they arrived. It was at this point that I realized Bridoodle and I might be high maintenance chicks. Neither of my friends brought a stroller and their kids had no meltdowns. I felt a little awkward.

Bri chose to sit in the peacock car and we rode together. I sure hope she has this much fun at Disney World this summer. She was delighted to ride. I think the whole trip was worth it for this picture. It’s going in a frame pronto.

Then we headed over to the barn and Brid got to milk a cow. She was REALLY good at it too. I was impressed. Maybe she’ll be a dairy farmer one day.

The barn also had a place where we could feed the goats by hand. Bri was understandably fearful that they would snack on her hands. So most of the goat treats ended up on the ground. But they were very appreciative of the treats that they were able to get ahold of.

We sat down for a minute to take in the flowers and wait for our friends to catch up. Bri chattered away about all of the things she’d seen. One of the things I love to see in her these days are the complicated questions that seem to bubble out of her, “Mama – there aren’t any ants here, because we left them at home, right? And ants can’t smile for a picture because they can’t say cheese? I can say cheese. Cheeeeeeeese! Hello, Mr. Cow. Only that isn’t a Mr. Cow. That’s a Miss Cow. Because she can make milk. Right, mama?”

“Look Mama, just like my zebra hairbow!” The zebras shared a pasture with the ostriches (one of whom was doing a very complicated mating dance for a lady ostrich who was not interested – sitcom material, I’m telling ya) and also the GIRAFFES. We had the chance to feed the giraffes some salad and let me just stop here to say, if you get that opportunity you should definitely jump on it because it was the BEST part of our visit to the zoo.

Did you know that giraffes have PURPLE tongues? Me neither!

The last exhibit that we got to see before we jetted towards the exit was the elephant arena. Bri and I were hungry enough at this point to eat … well, an elephant. So we headed for the door to meet Aunt Missa and Unca Joss for lunch.

Here are some of the self-portraits that I took throughout the day that were runners up for my 7days photo.  Because there’s always room for one more collage of pictures, right?

girl’s night out with Mandisa and Anita Renfroe

March 13th, 2011 by Cindy

On Saturday I had the privilege of hanging out with some especially amazing women! The ladies from my Sunday School class all got together for a girls night out. We had dinner at Fatz cafe and then saw Mandisa in concert with Anita Renfroe.

We had so much fun chatting that we didn’t arrive at the church early like we’d planned to. The doors opened at 6pm. When we showed up at 6:15 there was a HUGE line.  The other girls from our group had arrived on time, and we seriously thought about cutting to their spot in line. But something about it being a church thing restrained us from being so rude. The line moved quickly, though and we scored amazing seats!

We waited inside for a little while before Cleve (from 88.3 WAFJ) welcomed us. He was one of maybe a dozen men in the place but there were hundreds of women! He told us that all but one of the bathrooms had been converted to women’s restrooms and pointed out the one remaining men’s room for the brave guys who had attended.

The first performance was by Anita Renfroe. She is HILARIOUS! We were rolling on the floor. She’s a world famous Christian comedienne and a lot of her pieces are spoofs of songs. It was a hoot! Wanna see a clip of that first song? It’s one of the most popular clips on YouTube!

Anita was followed by Mandisa, a popular Christian artist who went really far in Season 5 of American Idol. She has lost 106 pounds since she faced the critique of Simon Cowell and one of the things she talked about between songs is her dependence on the Lord during her weight loss. She gives Him all of the glory. It was beautiful to hear her testimony. Her singing had us all dancing. Some of us lucky girls even got pulled up on stage so that we could dance.

She sang so passionately! We really got a workout as we danced along to her music. I can’t wait for her new album to be released next month. She sang some of the new songs and the message was extremely powerful. So often we hide ourselves behind imitation perfection instead of being real about our struggles. Her title song for the coming album speaks to letting go of those masks so that we can experience freedom. It’s beautiful!

During intermission, I headed to the World Vision table. I absolutely LOVE this company. Elise, the girl in the middle of the image above, gets to travel with Mandisa and Anita on behalf of World Vision. She has such a passion for these kids and was extremely helpful with my slew of questions. She was also featured in one of Anita’s videos – a spoof from Taylor Swift’s Romeo and Juliet song.

If you have the resources to spare $35 a month, it would be a huge investment in the life of a child that needs help. That’s just a little bit over $1 per day. Surely you can do that, right? Even if you’re afraid of commitment like I am, that’s not a bank-breaking sacrifice. In fact, if you’re anything like me, the hardest part is choosing which child. I finally had to tell myself, “I can’t help them all, but I can help this one.” I closed my eyes and pointed at a picture. That was the only way I could make a decision.

Before the performances started again, I had the chance to slip back stage. I got to meet Jennifer, Michelle and Laura who sing backup vocals for Mandisa. They were so sweet to me. All of them have been singing to audiences since they were little girls. I felt so privileged to chat with them. As I headed back to my seat a thousand more questions bombarded me. Don’tcha hate it when that happens? I spent the rest of the evening intrigued as to the dynamic of these three girls. They seemed to be nearly my age and I wondered if they have children and husbands waiting at home while they travel. How does it feel to be so talented and yet almost invisible on stage? Do they ever get frustrated with this situation?

Anita and Mandisa concluded the evening with a Q&A session followed by a hilarious performance/music video of the song Ebony and Ivory. They had us in stitches. During the video, Mandisa tried to teach Anita how to dance. That didn’t work out very well. Anita wore her spiky high heels while Mandisa ran on the tread mill. At one point they switched make-up with comical results. It was a super cute way of unifying the two friends despite their differences. We left on that fabulous high note and headed for home. The only thing that could have made the evening more perfect was if we’d gotten an extra hour of sleep instead of losing that hour to DST!

I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as I did! Let me know if I left out any of your favorite details. Here’s a good spot to share your opinion of the evening. {Note: If this is your first time commenting, your words will be sent to me for approval before the comment will be visible. a second helping of mystery photos

March 13th, 2011 by Cindy

The first version of the detective game happened almost by accident and was extremely difficult. Your answers were intriguing and insightful. For some of you Sherlocks, this version will seem too easy, I’m sure. Hopefully though, more people will play along this time. The first person to correctly identify each image by Friday, March 19th will win a $5 gift card to Starbucks. You’re welcome to guess as many times as you wish. The last guess that you make will be considered your final answer. Just like last time, I plan to announce the winners and the answer key over the weekend.

The game is afoot! {Note: the letter corresponds to the image immediately BELOW it.} {{And one more note: If you’re posting a comment for the first time, it must be approved before it will be visible to others. This keeps the spammy posts away!}}

like the phoenix arising

March 9th, 2011 by Cindy

I’ve seen it so many times with my own eyes. A normal girl in jeans and a button down shirt walks around a plain Sunday School room in a dusty corner of the church. She laughs and poses for my camera.

Then amidst a bustle of helpful friends, this normal girl is plunged into a mountain of white fabric and on the other side a princess emerges. It’s always a breath taking transformation. I love that part of the day.

Time after time, my brides come back to me with the same comments after the wedding. It’s a delight to hear them. 100% of my brides have said that I helped them to relax and enthusiastically enjoy their special day.

Here’s an excerpt from a thank you note I received in the mail recently from one of my 2011 brides. “Cindy … You have captured every step just perfectly. I can’t imagine how anyone could have done a better job. Your creativeness was an exact match for [us].  We also appreciate you really listening to what we wanted – and you got it all!!!”

you deserve a better image

March 8th, 2011 by Cindy

Sometimes when I get on facebook, I kind of cringe at the photos that I see. Most of them are images that other people have tagged of me. My husband calls me a photo snob. I just can’t help it.  People post some of the craziest images on facebook.

And since I know that I definitely criticize my appearance more than anyone else, I thought I should offer you a solution if you’re in the same boat. This month I’m running a special just for you! So that you can put your truly beautiful self out there for your world to see. And here’s the best part … I guarantee satisfaction or else you get your money back! Not a bad deal, eh?

the shoe book

March 7th, 2011 by Cindy

I have a weakness for shoes. Especially high heels. They just seem to call to me. And I must confess that in my perfect world, the one I have dreamed up in my head, my shoe collection would look something like Goldie Hawn’s closet from the movie Overboard.

And so I’ve decided to start a new project. A project entirely devoted to shoes and why we love them. I plan to photograph them over the course of the next year – I want to get a good sampling from each season.

After collecting images and quotes, I will put together a coffee table book which will be available for purchase.

If you would like to participate, I would love to have your help! Let me know if you have eye-catching shoes, or a fun story to share. I’d love to use your quotes and your modeling skills.
